Antique Japanese Kutani Aka-e Vase, Meiji Period (1868–1912)

A finely painted Japanese Kutani porcelain vase in the classic aka-e ("red picture") style. The small ovoid form is wrapped in a rich iron-red ground and densely decorated with robed Chinese-style figures and karako (playful boys) among stylized pine, chrysanthemum rosettes, and scrolling clouds, all drawn in fine red line-work and heightened with gold (kinsai). The shoulder carries a band of green foliate motifs, and the base bears a hand-painted green square "九谷" (Kutani) seal, the traditional origin mark of Kutani ware, set within a softly crackled glaze consistent with Meiji-period aka-e production.

This decoration and palette are characteristic of Saikō ("revived") Kutani of the Meiji period (1868–1912), the era when Kutani kilns produced highly detailed aka-e wares in gold and red for both domestic use and export. Minor wear to the gilding and glaze crackle are consistent with age.
