1980s Silver-Leaf Folding Hand Fan with Black Ribs, Tokyo

A small theatrical gesture you can carry in a clutch or class up your space by putting it on display. Pleated leaves of metallic silver paper open from black lacquered ribs into a full, dramatic arc. Found in a boutique vintage collection in Tokyo.

Folding fans (sensu) have been a Japanese export staple since the Edo period, but the metallic-leaf party fan had its real revival in the 1980s, when eveningwear leaned into metallic lamé and shine.
