1980s Japanese Metallic Geometric Folding Sensu Hand Fan, Blue & Gold

A small theatrical gesture you can carry in a clutch or class up your space by putting it on display. Deep cobalt paper scattered with gold flecks like stars, layered with pale geometric sails that drift across the surface, all riding on slim black bamboo ribs. Open it and the room cools; close it and it disappears into a sleeve. Found in a boutique vintage collection in Tokyo.

Folding fans (sensu) have been a Japanese export staple since the Edo period, but the metallic-leaf party fan had its real revival in the 1980s, when eveningwear leaned into metallic lamé and shine.
